It’s the holiday season, and throughout the world many Sailors are standing the watch away from home. While, it is an unfortunate fact, it is a fact nonetheless that missing holidays and other events is just part of life for folks in the military. For some like me this is old hat, been there and done it many times over. For others this will be their first holiday away. In either case, it’s not easy, but most know that this is what we signed up for. The mission comes first, and this is where the mission is.
While this time can be a bit depressing, you find comfort where you can. Perhaps that comfort comes from shipmates, were all in this together. Maybe you will decorate your spaces, as the fire marshal turns a blind eye. Maybe you throw on some festive garments and participate in an holiday themed MWR event. If you are lucky, you might even win a nice prize. Some will find a bit of comfort in the holiday meal, where the galley staff does their best. Maybe you just enjoy a relaxed day and avoid it all, just sort of keep to yourself.
Whatever we do, it can never be the same as a Christmas at home. For some, it may be better than home, not everyone has great holidays at home. However, most will feel some form of homesickness maybe even a bit of depression. Regardless, most Sailors make the best of the situation; it just is what it is. We do this because it needs to be done, and well; somebody has to do it. For all those who are deployed for the holidays, remember to take care of yourself, and take care of your shipmates. If you are feeling down remember, this is temporary. Soon enough it will be somebody else’s turn to stand the watch, while you enjoy holidays at home.
